The Book of Deer Project. The Book of Deer was compiled and written between 800 AD and 900 AD, and the Gaelic texts added in the period c.1100-50, in the Ugie Valley around Old Deer in north-east Aberdeenshire. Amid the Latin gospel text and Celtic illuminations of this unique manuscript, can be found the oldest pieces of Gaelic writing to remain from early medieval Scotland. A digital copy of the Book has been commissioned and over the next few months an archive will be developed and available on-line to provide greater detail and a means of study, as part of the project as a whole. At present, the project is working in association with the University of Aberdeen, Cambridge University Library, Aberdeenshire Council, and BT Scotland.

History of the Kilt in Scotland. There is much evidence that many of the more recognizable tartans seen today are in fact creations of Scottish and English tailors during the reign of Queen Victoria. Despite this, it has generally been accepted that the basic concepts of the tartan and the wearing of the kilt do indeed have their origin in the history of the early Scottish and Irish clans, or families. It has been demonstrated that certain clans did aspire to a certain uniformity of design for their garments as early as the tenth and eleventh centuries.
